A Guide to Paris

Quiet mornings on the Seine and the city that earns every cliche.

Paris is best taken in arrondissements, not landmarks - pick two a day and let coffee, bridges and bookshops carry you between them.

01 The Marais and the Seine

Begin in Le Marais - courtyards, falafel queues at L'As, and the Place des Vosges, the city's oldest square. Walk down to the Seine and follow it east as the bouquinistes are opening their green boxes of old books.

02 Saint-Germain and the long lunch

Cross to the Left Bank for Saint-Germain-des-Pres - Cafe de Flore for people-watching, then a small bistro lunch with a half-bottle of Loire white. Afternoons here are non-negotiable.

Paris is not a checklist. It is a tempo.

03 Montmartre after the crowds

Go up to Sacre-Coeur after 9pm in summer - the steps clear, the city lights spread out below, and the buskers play softer once the cameras are gone.
