Skopje is a small capital with an outsized personality - Ottoman, Yugoslav-modern and contemporary all on the same block.
01 Across the Stone Bridge
Start at Macedonia Square and cross the Stone Bridge into the Old Bazaar - one of the largest in the Balkans. Copperware, hand-rolled burek, and small kafanas where a coffee still costs a euro.
02 Matka Canyon, half a day away
Twenty minutes by taxi from the centre - emerald water, a small kayak rental, and the Vrelo cave by boat. The easiest big-nature escape from any Balkan capital.
Skopje surprises you twice - once for what it is, once for what it isn't.
