01 Coffee house mornings
Begin at Cafe Central or Cafe Sperl - marble tables, newspapers on wooden frames, and a melange that arrives without rush. In Vienna, ordering one coffee buys you the entire morning.
02 Walking the Ring
The Ringstrasse is a museum of facades - opera, parliament, city hall, university, all on one curving boulevard. Walk it once on foot, then ride the entire loop on tram 1 or 2 for a quieter second look.
Vienna does not impress - it persuades, slowly, over an afternoon.
03 Klimt, Schiele and an early evening concert
Belvedere holds Klimt's Kiss; the Leopold has the city's best Schiele rooms. Aim for the last hour before closing - the light through the upper windows is the real show. Then a chamber concert in any of a dozen palaces.
